Buses
Buses are probably the cheapest and easiest form of transport for those without cars, and Ballarat has reasonable bus coverage. Bus Network Map for Ballarat.
Fares
All buses in Ballarat are on the myki smart-card system, however you can still buy a paper ticket on the bus for cash, and this seems likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future. Almost all travel inside Ballarat is a single zone (see network map).
You can use a myki smartcard or a short term ticket. Fares are billed in two hour or daily increments, with short term tickets being around 10% more expensive per trip, but myki cards cost $6 to buy.
myki cards can be obtained from the Ballarat Post Office (map) as well as from various locations around Melbourne (including the myki centre at Southern Cross Station) and directly from the myki website.
The myki card can store myki pass (travel days) and/or myki money (dollar value). The myki pass is available for a minimum of 7 days ($17). A single zone two hour ticket is $1.80, and a day pass is $3.20. A fare table is at the myki website and the Metlink Melbourne website but they disagree on the exact prices.
Given that the short term day pass adds up to $17 for 5 days, and the mykii 7 day is $17, plus $6 for a card, the frugal attendees may choose to use short-term day passes, which can be brought with cash on the bus.
You can top up your myki pass via a few choices, including on the bus. If topping up online, allow 24 hours for the top-up information to be distributed to the buses.
Also note that out-of-state concession cards are not accepted on Victorian public transport, but children under 16 are eligible for concession fares. See the eligibility list.
