Public transport options

Getting to Ballarat has a lot of detail on this, so just a set of quick links here:

  • Melbourne airport to Ballarat direct: schedule for the buses LCA is providing, need to be booked at registration, for arrivals Sunday 15th and departures Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd only.
  • Melbourne airport to Ballarat direct: Ballarat Airport bus (private company, not LCA-affiliated), several services a day
  • Melbourne city centre to Ballarat: Vline trains, several services a day
  • Melbourne airport to Melbourne city centre: SkyBus, several services an hour

Which airport?

You probably want Melbourne (MEL) also known as Tullamarine. This airport has better public transport connections, and as yet the LCA organisers are only putting on the special buses from this airport.

You might consider Avalon (AVV) if you are hiring a car, particularly if you want to explore the Great Ocean Road before or after LCA, since it is on that side of Melbourne. Compare airfare and car hire prices and make your own decision.

Safety message:
Many people are likely to drive to Ballarat, whether it's driving all the way from home, or hiring a vehicle from the airport. Of particular note to international Speakers and Delegates, please be aware that Australia has some of the toughest drink driving laws in the world. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05, and it is strictly enforced. As an organising team, we've worked hard to put on extra busses to/from all official events to prevent the need to drive. Don't be a bloody idiot: If you drink, don't drive.
